Matter of Trust Mobilizes for the Gulf
As we’re all painfully aware, the massive oil spill in the gulf is having devastating effects on ecosystems and communities. The organization Matter of Trust has orchestrated an extraordinary effort to collect hair and fur clippings that are recycled into booms and mats for oil cleanup. Salons have been active participants in this program, helping to turn a natural material into a solution during this environmental disaster.
Aveda recently spoke with Matter of Trust to learn more about their progress in the gulf. Matter of Trust is continuing their hair collection and expects to have 25 miles of hair boom assembled by the end of this week and made available for the oil cleanup. Municipal public works departments, harbors, and emergency management teams in Gulf States such as Florida and Alabama are actively using the hair booms to protect their coastline and beaches. The natural buoyancy and absorbency of hair make it a viable solution for removing oil from water. The oil-soaked hair booms also break down more efficiently with minimal off-gassing since they’re made primarily of natural materials. There is an ongoing need for hair clippings to support Matter of Trust’s hair boom program. Hair clippings donated by salons can contribute to the cleanup in the gulf and also help with the 2,600 other oil spills that happen each year around the world.
Anyone can sign up to help collect hair. Matter of Trust will accept fur from any pets and hair. There is also a donation page to help support this organization.

Certification of botanical Ingredients
Aveda is proud to be the first beauty company to receive Cradle to
Cradle certification for four botanical ingredients: sandalwood
oil from Australia, rose oil and lavender oil from Bulgaria and
Uruku from Brazil. The certification follows three years of rigorous
independent assessment by the environmental protection and
encouragement agency (epea) to ensure that each ingredient
meets ecological and health criteria based on the Cradle to Cradle
design Concept (C2C), which replaces the “waste model” concept
with the concept of “nutritional cycles.” C2C principles require that
materials must be either continually reusable or biodegradable
and renewable, and must meet standards for human health in
production, handling and use as well as impact on the environment.

Cradle to Cradle is a way of thinking that we apply to how we
operate at aveda. The essence of C2C thinking is to minimize
or eliminate adverse impacts to the environment by selecting
materials and processes that enable either the continuous cycling
